When Doctor Rawson Penfold came to the South Australian colony in 1844 he brought vine cuttings which he planted around his stone cottage, which they called 'The Grange'. This was situated in Magill, which is now part of suburban Adelaide. Today PENFOLDS sells wine worldwide. In Australia PENFOLDS is seen as an industry leader, the company that led the way in establishing an international quality reputation for our wine industry. PENFOLDS continued success results from years of experience combined with the skilful matching of oak and fruit. PENFOLDS philosophy: 'the right style, the right grapes, the right oak, the right bottling time and a little patience, ensures a selection of internationally acclaimed wines to suit everyone's palate'.
Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz
ABV 14%
PENFOLDS Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1962, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna(R) vineyard purchased by PENFOLDS in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced.  Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented, providing a substantial proportion of the fruit for this vintage.
Bin 28
Vineyard Region Langhorne Creek, Padthaway
Maturation -  in a combination of one, two year old and older American oak.
Food Matches - Grilled lamb, rich beef dishes
Winemaker comments by Peter Gago
Nose of demi-glace and roasting pan juices, beneath scents of pipe tobacco, vanilla and pencil shavings oak - much more than just a simple varietal offering.
Palate - showing dark, black conserve fruit flavours with Satsuma plum notes to the fore. Further liqueur chocolate and spice flavours are impregnated by overt, chewy and ripe tannins. To sum up, the integrated fruit, oak and acid loudly proclaim harmony and balance.

Penfolds Bin 128
ABV 14.5%
Created in 1962, PENFOLDS Bin 128 is a regional wine that reflects the unique climate and growing conditions of South Coonawara
GRAPE VARIETY Shiraz
MATURATION This wine was matured for 12 months in 25% new French oak hogsheads, with the balance in one and two year old French oak hogsheads.
WINE ANALYSIS Alc/Vol: 14.5%FOOD MATCHES Ideal with hearty meat dishes.
Peter Gago - PENFOLDS Chief Winemaker Shimmering purple hues. The nose is youthful and fresh with a rush of stylish fruits - raspberry, Satsuma plum - to the fore. A cedary oak background is in balance with the cooler climate spices and earthy, meat complexities.
PALATEThe palate is defined, tight and focussed. Integrated, stylish oak fuses effortlessly with a compote of expressive, red-berried fruits.
Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz
Australia's Coonawarra district and the relatively elegant style of cool-climate Shiraz. From the 1980 vintage, French oak replaced American, highlighting the pepper, spice and floral characteristics that define this style. Since the mid-1980s, a greater attention has been paid to fruit ripeness, resulting in a wine that is fuller in style and structure.

 NOSE
persistent tannins comfortably convey a long and lingering finish, signing off and providing closure for this medium-weight Bin 128 package. While this wine needs time, it possesses all the right ingredients to excel as an A-level Bin 128
 Alc/Vol: 13.5
FOOD MATCHES Beef, Lamb,Brick red with crimson hues. There is a dense core of black cherry, dark chocolate and black cherry liqueur. Across the palate, splashes of chocolate and mint combine with hints of rosemary and warmed spice. Some charry, toasty notes are evident from the balanced, integrated oak. This wine has great balance with great integration between good fruit and oak. Flavours of black cherry and dark chocolate combine with developed black olive and spicy fruit cake tones. Full flavoured, velvetty tannins enhance the long sweet fruit finish.

Bin 2 Shiraz Mourvedre

Penfolds Bin 2 was first released in 1960, but was discontinued during the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom.

The original Bin 2 was an 'Australian Burgundy' style (despite its Rhone varieties) - typically a soft, medium-bodied wine based on Shiraz.

The Bin 2 blend of Shiraz and Mourvedre is relatively uncommon in Australian table wines. Also known as Mataro or Monastrell, Mourvedre was introduced to Australia in the 1830s. Sometimes used in fortified wine production, this grape is widely planted in the Barossa Valley. It is greatly valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip. Interest in
Bin 2 has grown as the popularity of traditional Rhone varieties and blends continues to flourish.

VINEYARD REGION Fruit is predominantly from Padthaway and
McLaren Vale, with significant contributions
from Barossa, Clare and Coonawarra.

GRAPE VARIETY Shiraz (77%), Mourvedre (23%).

MATURATION The majority of this wine was matured for 8 months in seasoned American oak, with a small parcel remaining in stainless steel to retain vibrant
fresh fruit character.

FOOD MATCHES Lamb kofta

COLOUR Deep Crimson with purple hues.

NOSE Rich, ripe & concentrated. Scents of stewed rhubarb, fresh liquorice and aniseed - all entwine with attractive all-spice, herbs and sage. A swirl initially reveals savoury notes with well integrated oak.

PALATE Complex, well-apportioned, with an impressive structure and balance. A focussed core of darker fruits and spice. Cedar and hazelnut flavours emanate from cleverly-handled seasoned oak, with overt talcy and gravely tannins patiently
waiting on the finish.

Classically Bin 2, with an envisioned medium term cellaring potential.

Bin 138 Barossa Valley
Grenache Mourvedre Shiraz

The Barossa Valley was planted extensively with Shiraz, Mourvedre and Grenache by the early settlers. In the 1950s Penfolds started experimenting with blending Shiraz and the robust grape variety Mourvedre. It wasn't until 1995, in response to a growing international market for the highly perfumed wines of the Southern Rhone, that Penfolds introduced the 1992 vintage of the Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre.

The wine was elevated to the Bin range with the 1998 Penfolds Bin 138. Sourced from old, low-yielding Barossa Valley vines, this is one of the few Penfolds wines that remains in component form during older, small-oak maturation and is blended just prior to bottling.

VINEYARD REGION Barossa Valley

GRAPE VARIETY Grenache (66%), Mourvedre (21%) Shiraz
(13%).

MATURATION This wine was matured for 14 months in five year old oak hogsheads.

PEAK DRINKING Lively and ready now, with years of rewarding
drinking ahead (to 2024).
FOOD MATCHES Cheese, Duck & Game
Winemaker comments by Peter Gago - Penfolds Chief Winemaker

COLOUR Crimson/garnet - medium intensity.

NOSE With the opulence of Barossa Grenache to the fore, juniper berry, sweet and ripe quince & pomegranate fruits and a spicy/nutty/liqueur lift give way to the savoury/cold meat/pan juice aromatics of the Mourvedre & Shiraz coalition.

PALATE Wonderful, warm Barossa primary fruits (wild raspberry, loganberry) merge into a pool of liqueur cherry-chocolate heightened by cherrypip tannins. The high Mourvedre component (21%) explains the persuasive gravely tannin on
the finish. Flavours suggest Barossa and the texture mirrors its varietal composition.
