The Region

The famous Chianti Classico region — home of the Castello di Gabbiano estate vineyards — lies in the heart of Tuscany. The soils there range from limestone and sandstone to clay, and the average elevation is 600-900 feet above sea level. Chianti typically has mild winters and warm summers and receives an average annual rainfall of 25 inches. The unique terroir of the Chianti Classico appellation continually yields high-quality fruit, rich in perfume and body.

The Tradition

Tuscany’s winemaking tradition was formed over 3,000 years ago when the Etruscans cultivated vines and made wine. Castello di Gabbiano joined this tradition when it was built in the 12th century, just south of Florence in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Construction of the Castello included a wine cellar intended for the production and conservation of wine. Today, this 252-acre estate is equipped with a modern fermentation cellar, yet the wines are still crafted in the rich and ancient Tuscan winemaking tradition by Winemaker Giancarlo Roman.

The Knight

Castello di Gabbiano's wines feature a distinctive and memorable Cavaliere that was part of a long-lost fresco that once adorned the castle walls. Story is told that this Cavaliere protected the Castello from outside invaders.
